The Key Stage 1 test is no longer compulsory from 2023.


Key Stage 1

What is it?

The Key Stage 1 SATs tests assess abilities in core areas. The test is informal, so most children aren’t aware they are taking a test.

What does it assess?

English: Reading (two papers), Grammar, punctuation and spelling (two papers: 1 x spelling, 1 x grammar and punctuation)

Maths (two papers: 1 x arithmetic, 1 x maths reasoning)

Which year group?

Year 2 (ages 6-7)

When is it?

June

Key Stage 2

What is it?

The Key Stage 2 SATs tests assess abilities in core areas. This is a much more formal test than KS1 SATs.

What does it assess?

English: Reading (comprehension questions), Grammar, punctuation and spelling (two papers: 1 x spelling, 1 x grammar, punctuation and vocabulary)

Maths (three papers:1 x arithmetic, 2 x maths reasoning)

Which year group?

Year 6 (ages 10-11)

When is it?

May

What do schools use them for?

Secondary schools are told the SATs scores of children coming into Year 7. Some schools use the scores to set children in English and Maths, and use them to form GCSE targets.
