Product description
Tornadoes are known to destroy anything they touch – flattening houses, uplifting trees, and tossing cars into the air. In this story, Troy and his mother prepare for such an emergency.
Silver level titles (equivalent to the White bridging book band) use sentences with two or three clauses and the length of the texts extends to around 1000 words to help build reading stamina. Real-life problems are also introduced to encourage empathy.
PM Plus Storybooks feature a classic story structure with tension, climax and resolution to engage young readers. The books have been written using carefully selected vocabulary to ensure children experience reading success.

The Tornado PM+
The Tornado, PM+
White colour band, Reading Recovery level 23, AR level 3.2
As with all PM text The Tornado has good shelf appeal; both title and cover are designed to appeal to younger able readers. Text font is clear, well-spaced for early readers who may still need to track text carefully and while illustrations lack sophistication, they present enough detail to support the content and enable discussion.
The story focuses on a young boy called Troy and his parents. Troy’s father works as a ‘spotter’ for the Weather Service and as the story begins he is about to head off in search of a reported tornado. Using language appropriate for children reading at expected standard for the end of KS1 the book tells a simple story describing the thoughts and feelings of those involved. Throughout the story description and the tornados effect on the land it travels across, allow a young reader to begin to understand its impact.
This is a good book for young readers who are just beginning to gain confidence in their ability. A simple storyline introduces more mature content and new vocabulary in such a way that ensures success. Content and style are of a sufficient complexity to make this a good text choice for a guided group reading session, promoting discussion about the characters feelings and actions.
