The Accidental Wizard

The leaves are falling and the kids are back at school. Autumn is here and what better time to read an old fashioned magical adventure from Kimberly Pauley. If you are a fan of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, you will love this hilarious tale of Twig, apprentice to incompetent wizard Ripplemintz. A spell is on the loose and Twig must capture it in a jar to protect the world, only he catches it in himself by mistake…. What more can go wrong!?

Perfect for bedtime reading, either independently or as read aloud for you and your child. Illustrations throughout from Jason Cockcroft.

My Story: Picture of Freedom

Narrative non-fiction is a great way to learn about the world and its history, in a way that engages the reader emotionally with figures from the past. None more than this new edition of a classic first-hand account. A great book for history lovers and for encouraging empathy with characters that may lead very different lives to ourselves.

Clotee Henley was a real life slave who helped over 150 other slaves escape via the Underground Railroad from Virginia to the northern states. The railroad was a secret network of people who worked together to help runaway slaves. We know all about her because despite it being illegal for slaves to read and write she taught herself in secret and left us her memoires. A wonderful book that shows how everyone can make a difference even in the direst of circumstances.
