Word problems are maths problems that are presented as text, usually in a narrative or story scenario with a varying number of sentences, rather than being presented as a sequence of numbers in a particular order. Solving these types of problems helps with:

Engagement in real-life maths
Exploration of thinking and reasoning skills
Development of an understanding of both how and why the problem is solvable
Provision of practice using a range of scenarios, getting more complex over time.
