Eva Ibbotson

Eva Ibbotson is the award-winning author of many books for children and adults. She has a daughter and three sons, who showed her that children like to read about ghosts, wizards, and witches “because they are just like people but madder and more interesting.”

She was born in Vienna, in Austria, but moved to England with her family when the Nazis came to power. After training to be a physiologist which she didn’t enjoy because she didn’t like doing experiments on animals, Eva got married and had four very nice children.

Her first children’s book, The Great Ghost Rescue was published in 1975, and she is best known for titles like Journey to the River Sea and The Dragonfly Pool. Eva died in 2010, aged 85.

   I like this book because it is very interesting. Maia falls in love with an Indian boy and make lots of new friends. The Carter’s are the worst people in this book.

   This is an absolutely beautifully written book with lots of plot twists that keep you on the edge of your seat. The descriptive writing makes you feel as though you are with the characters in the rain forest. I absolutely loved it.

   A fascinating story, I love this book. I recommend this to 10 or above (age) as the plot might be too advanced for the children to understand.

    this was a sad yet thrilling story. Every time you put the book down you want to know what will happen next. Eva Ibbotson really knows how to write a good story. I really felt I was there witnessing all the tropical animals and at times when it seemed that there was no hope. I recommend this to young and old

    Maia is a orphan, she has had no contact with family, nor does she know of any…Her parents died in a car crash. But then everything gets better, she hears from her cousins, who have two twin daughters-Beatrice and Gwendolyn!And even better, they live in the Amazon! Maia dreams for hours on end about her new life…

    A classic Ibbotson tale, however just lacks the heart and soul of her other books such as The Star of Kazan and One Dog and his boy.

    My fave book, a must have if u like books. Plot is exciting i couldn’t put the book down and i was halfway through and it was midnight, past my bedtime(11pm) but i had to finish it! Its Bril. :)

    i am in the middle of reading this book. it is brriiiiiiiiiillllllllllliant! when i first picked it up and started reading the first few pages i couldnt put it down… its the best book be eva ibbotson and probablee more

    I really enjoyed this book, but I found it quite difficult to get into. My Dad first read it to me about five years ago, and I re-read it recently. The story is captivating, possibly because of the decriptions.

    This is the one of the best books ever written!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I enjoyed it at all times. Sadly its not a book i’d pick up at a bookstore so i only got read it because my nan got it for me. Enjoyed it at all times . I shunned the twins badly. they were so horrible. I’m sad that Eva Ibbotson died last year and I hope her books stay popular forever!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I loved this book, it had a great sense of adventure and a well written and complex plot. I enjoyed the characters and their unusual personalities. I would recommend this book to everyone !

    Journey To The River Sea was definately a Jaw-dropping book! I understand that some people found parts a little boring but i found you had to be in the right mood and motivate yourself to get to the next chapter. The style of writing needed a little adjusting too so you couldnt just pick it up and put it down like you can with some books. Once you have given it a good go i asure you, you will find it very original. An underestimated book which should be given more credit! This book left me reeling for the sequel :) x

    The story is very gripping, emotional and exciting. Though some parts are very boring but at the end everything fits in like a puzzle! I would reccomend it for the age group 9-11.

    I am up to Chapter 9 in this book and so far, the story hasn’t been that good. It has been slightly boring and the characters are not as alive as they could be! The story is based around a girl, who goes to live with her aunty and uncle in Brazil. The story could definitely be improved. However, I have not read it all yet, so my opinion may change nearer the end!
