Product description

It’s 1910, and orphan Maia is off on the greatest adventure of her life! She is leaving her English boarding school and sailing up the faraway Amazon, to start a new life with distant relatives there. Nothing can prepare Maia for the fabulous wilderness of the Amazon river, or its border-town Manaus, surrounded by moist jungle greenery. But Maia’s relatives are not all they seem, and soon she and a mysterious Indian boy, Finn, are escaping up the Amazon on a journey of discovery and danger. Can they survive in the uncharted world of the river sea – a place of anacondas and insects, crocodiles and monkeys, poisonous trees and strange, impossible beasts? Stuffed with wonderful characters, exotic creatures and fantastical landscapes, Eva Ibbotson’s modern classic is a voyage into the exotic landscape that lies buried within every child’s imagination.

Winner of the Nestle Smarties Gold Award.

“A plot too exciting to put down. Sheer pleasure.” The Times

I like this book because it is very interesting. Maia falls in love with an Indian boy and make lots of new friends. The Carter’s are the worst people in this book.

this was a sad yet thrilling story. Every time you put the book down you want to know what will happen next. Eva Ibbotson really knows how to write a good story. I really felt I was there witnessing all the tropical animals and at times when it seemed that there was no hope. I recommend this to young and old

But then everything gets better, she hears from her cousins, who have two twin daughters-Beatrice and Gwendolyn! And even better, they live in the Amazon! A classic Ibbotson tale, however just lacks the heart and soul of her other books such as The Star of Kazan and One Dog and his boy.

I really enjoyed this book, but I found it quite difficult to get into. My Dad first read it to me about five years ago, and I re-read it recently. The story is captivating, possibly because of the decriptions.

This is the one of the best books ever written!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I enjoyed it at all times. Sadly its not a book i’d pick up at a bookstore so i only got read it because my nan got it for me. Enjoyed it at all times . I shunned the twins badly. they were so horrible. I’m sad that Eva Ibbotson died last year and I hope her books stay popular forever!!!!!!!!!!!!

Journey To The River Sea was definately a Jaw-dropping book! I understand that some people found parts a little boring but i found you had to be in the right mood and motivate yourself to get to the next chapter. The style of writing needed a little adjusting too so you couldnt just pick it up and put it down like you can with some books. Once you have given it a good go i asure you, you will find it very original. An underestimated book which should be given more credit! This book left me reeling for the sequel :) x

I am up to Chapter 9 in this book and so far, the story hasn’t been that good. It has been slightly boring and the characters are not as alive as they could be! The story is based around a girl, who goes to live with her aunty and uncle in Brazil. The story could definitely be improved. However, I have not read it all yet, so my opinion may change nearer the end!
