Read & Respond Engage provides teaching notes and resources around classic children’s stories.

As well as access to the Engage system with comprehensive lesson plans, and hundreds of digital and printable resources for you and your children, you also get one copy of the children’s book, a classroom poster and a handbook to get you started.

Read & Respond Teacher Resource Titles

In-depth analysis of each book to get the whole class thinking about the story—and expressing their thoughts aloud and in writing. Within each Teacher Resource Book you’ll find:

  • Background information
  • Detailed chapter notes
  • Plot, character and setting activities
  • Shared reading section, with three extracts to read as a class
  • ‘Talk about it’ section to get the children discussing feelings and ideas around the book
  • ‘Get writing’ activities to help children structure and express their views about the book
  • Assessment activities*

Read & Respond Interactive

These multimedia CD-ROMs can be used as standalone products, or to expand upon the corresponding Read & Respond teacher’s book. Read & Respond Interactive is ideal for exploring cross-curricular themes and for inspiring reluctant readers.

Each CD-ROM contains:

  • Teaching notes, including lesson plans, differentiation, cross-curricular links and editable notes
  • An author interview or biography
  • Audio clips
  • Text extracts
  • Cross-curricular photos and video clips to help put the story into context
  • A word bank – linked to the text extracts – containing audio and text definitions
  • A selection of interactive whiteboard activities.

Pam Dowson

Pam Dowson is a PGCE tutor in Primary English, and independent literacy consultant.

Jean Evans

Jean Evans is an early years consultant and nursery inspector. For many years she ran her own nursery school and she has also been head of an LEA nursery unit/Early Years co-ordinator. She is the author of Themes on Display: All About Me, Themes on Display Festivals, Skills for Early Years Constructing and Making, Skills for Early Years Social Skills and Early Years Around the Year Personal, Social and Emotional Development. She is a regular contributor to Early Years Activity Bank and Nursery Education magazine.

Elspeth Graham

Elspeth Graham is a freelance educational writer. She has written for many different publishers, including Longman, OUP and PCET.

Gillian Howell

Qualified as a teacher in 1971. 3 children, break from work to bring them up. Returned to teaching in 1985. Joined Educational Publishing 1991-2000. Reading and Language consultant for Heinemann, Ginn and Rigby 1997-2000. Freelance writer from 2000.

Liz Miles

Liz Miles is an educational writer and author of numerous children’s books.

Jillian Powell

Jillian Powell is experienced in teaching and in writing for all age ranges and key stages of the National Curriculum from Early years through Key Stage 4. She has written both fiction and non-fiction for reading schemes as well as the trade (eg Ginn, Heinemann, Longman, Watts). She is the author of Writing Guides: Adventure Stories (9-11).

Nichola Rees
